Scrivener App Reviews

Best

This is the best app ever to write any type of content. I’ve used it to write my dissertation, essays, web articles, short stories. It has everything you need to organize your writings and to do the actual writing. I can’t wait for you guys to release the iOS version, so that I don’t need to rely on other apps to write from my iPad, not to mention how wonderful will be to access my Scrivener’s notes on the go.

Powerful Organizing and Publishing Tool

I love using Scrivner. There are so many ways to organize and visualize what you are writing. Do yourself a favor and watch some youtube videos and read the eBooks on how to use this tool like a pro. I just passed the 70,000 word point on my novel, and everything is organized. Where have come from and where I am going. All laid out before me.

Great Product from a Great Company

I’m not getting into the specifics of this product, read the other reviews. What I can say is that I know what I like and I like a good deal. This is a fantastic app and even though the company offers a student discount which I qualify for, I paid full price because they are more than fair with their 30 day trials and general awesomeness. There’s a learning curve, but once you get it, it’s the ultimate product for writing!

Nice app - not recommended if you use multiple platforms

I really wanted to like this app but because I’m having issues syncing my files between the PC and Mac versions, I may have to look for an alternative program. However, if you’re just a mac user, this is a great app. It has a helpful section to collect all your research, an area to make notes, you can color code sections of your work….I could go on. But, since their syncing between files are limited I’ve just given this an ‘ok’ rating. With respect to the syncing, apparently you can only use certain cloud services for it to work properly. And even then, it’s recommended that you use a backed up version of the file when opening it up on a different platform. This is such a hassle that it’s not even worth making the effort. I can’t tell you the number of times that my work did not sync and I had to scramble to deal with the fall out.

Scrivener is great, iOS compatibility makes it the only real choice.

Greetings everyone, I was fortunate enough to be part of the beta test group for the iOS version of Scrivener, which is also great. The fact that this fantastic tool is now accessible on all of my devices makes it the only real writing project development choice for me. …of course, since discovering Scrivener, it was immediately clear that using anything else was always going to be at best an undesirable compromise. On July 20, 2016 the unavoidable suffering of the past with regard to iOS writing solutions moves from reality to just a memory. Literature and Latte ROCKS!!!

Really excited about the IOS version

I’ve been using Scrivener for awhile and I’ve been in love with it since day one but was sad to know there wasn’t a IOS app attached. Excited that it is releasing soon. Really excited to be able to continue writing on the go. If you’re a manic writer with a less an organized way of dealing with your writing this really makes you focus on putting things in their place..which I appreciate.

Where is 2.8 update in app store?

Scrivener is amazing… there’s no better tool to compile my research and write my books. After the much-anticipated update to 2.8, I found that there’s no Update option in the App Store “Updates” tab. Is this an oversite? Why aren’t we prompted to update form 2.7 to 2.8?

Scrivener + iOS =

Seriously, the most amazing word processing platform in the universe. Now with the ability on the iPad and iPhone I can work anywhere, even the beach. The iOS integration is pretty slick, but I’m not a fan of DropBox at all. I would really like to see the ability to choose from any 3rd party cloud storage provider. Mega, ShareSync, iCloud, etc. I would love to see a decent mind map feature added, like XMind to make this the full Swiss Army Knife of content creation of all time. Overall, the addition of iOS w/ Sync is a breath of fresh air to make mobile devices more useful for authors. Looking forward to the future enhancements.

The only writing program you need.

The power of Scrivener is organization. Whether you are writing a research paper, a book, a novel, or a screenplay (I’ve used it for all of those purposes), Scrivener lets you keep all of your writing, references, characters, locations, topics, themes, resources, etc neatly, sanely organized (and if you are so inclined, annotated, commented, and labelled). You can quickly draft outlines as “index cards” and then use those as building blocks to fill in your actual content at your leisure. The beauty of this is: instead of working in one, giant, ever-growing document, you are essentially working from several… but with the added bonus of being able to treat those many smaller documents as if they were all individual parts of a single document. This unique form of organization means that you can easily write in a non-linear fashion, as inspiration strikes, without worrying about your project getting messy, muddled, or confused. You can also keep “folders” on characters, locations, or any other research topics that aren’t going to be included in your finished work. And it while the developers claim that Scrivener isnt intended to be a replacement for screenwriting software like Final Draft or Movie Magic, I find that it actually works better than those options since Scrivener includes formatting options for screen and stage plays (both FD and MM have aged poorly, and are horrible buggy messes). And no matter what your topic or format, when you are finished, Scrivener lets you “compile” the sum of your completed work into a single document in any popular format you might need… MS Word (doc & docx), Final Draft, ePub, mobi, or HTML… just to name a few. No matter what you are using it for, Scrivener WILL improve your writing process substantially. Best of all, Scrivener is now available for iOS and offers 100% feature parity between OSX and iOS… with project syncing via Dropbox. If you’re lucky enough to have an iPad Pro with a keyboard cover, Scrivener finally makes professional writing on your iPad not only feasible, but pleasant and powerful.

Now I know what the fuss is about!

As a creative writer, I found myself confused and disoriented by most of the other offerings in the App Store. All I wanted was something geared toward what was considered writing before the age of blogs, markdown and "short form" writing. But what I found were me-too apps that had slick marketing departments. Those apps relied mostly on keywords and pseudo-innovation to gain attention for what are ultimately simple tools geared toward people writing blogs. (See: iA Writer and Ulysses) I wanted tools that go above and beyond the tried-and-true wordprocessors weve had at our disposale for decades. I wanted something to help me create art and organize essays. Just a couple of days in, after having never used Scrivener, I can already tell that this is a mature application. After evaluating their file format and Dropbox utilization, I feel quite comfortable diving in to do some heavy writing.

Essential for long form writing

There is no better app for long form writing…period! Be it a novel, thesis, journalism, non-fiction, etc. This is the best out there and absolutly essential.

Terrific writing application … Just Got Better

I have been using Scrivener for a few years now. It has always been a terrific tool for writing, but with the addition of the iOS companion application, Scrivener has gotten even better. Now you can write anywhere at anytime. On your phone. On your iPad. And of course on your Mac. Scrivener puts the focus on the words that you are writing. You can minutely control the writing environment, but the program also gets out of your way when you need to concentrate on filling blank pages with words. It is very easy to outline documents, to move scenes or blocks of text around, and to export your work to any format that you could possibly want, including ePub (for publishing in iBooks) or mobi (for publishing in Kindle). The documentation is very detailed, and there is a lively user forum to address questions. If you are a long form writer, Scrivener is simply terrific.

With the iOS app now released Scrivener is hands down the greatest writing app made for Mac and iOS

With the iOS app now released Scrivener is hands down the greatest writing app made for Mac and iOS. There is nothing any reasonable and well educated writer could possibly complain about. Scrivener hand you the key to the kingdom, all you have to do is create.

Love but...

I love this app! It is everything I’ve been looking for. The only complaint I have is that they don’t have an iPad app which would be perfect for me. I don’t always take my laptop with me (it’s old and heavy) but I do take my iPad everywhere and you never know when inspiration will strike.

Love It!

I love Scrivener. Finally, an application that’s easy to use that allows me to do what I love-write. I just love the app features and functionality. I don’t like that I have to pay $19.99 for the iPad app after I’ve paid over $40.00 for the Mac app.

I must have missed the boat

I purchased this app after researching writing apps for a while. This app was given a lot of praise, but the price gave me pause especially when you have to pay additional for the IOS versions. I downloaded the demo and that is all it was a demo. It didn’t allow me to have access to any of the features that were advertised so I bit the bullet and got the ipad version first since it was cheaper and had great reviews.. The IOS version does not have any of the features that are promoted so I purchased the mac version. I wish I could get my money back. Its been over a hour and I am still lost on how to work this app. I read the manual flipping back and forth trying to learn the features, but that became too much so I watched the outdated youtube manuals that look nothing like the version I just purchased. I am still in the dark as I was before. I cannot find the features that I purchased this ridiculously expensive app for. Future writers research carefully. Many other writers’ seem to have a lot of success, but I am not one of them. Oh well I guess its back to the drawing board.

The Best

If you don’t like this application it is because you either don’t need to write much or you don’t understand it. Once you understand what it does and how it does it, you will love it. It is built by people who are artists not engineers (like a standard word processor like Word). Cannot say enough about how much it helps.

The Best - the Only

I avoided Scrivener for years, thinking I was doing just fine with MS Word, thank you. I’m a Word power-user. I know the tricks. I know the obscure features and fixes. And nesides, my beta-readers and editor want copies in word. Then, my daughter gifted me the software for christmas...there’s no going back. I still use word for plenty on the tail end. but for creation, for plotting (or for rearranging when i’m pantsing), and for straight up writing… Scrivener is better than anything.

A work of true craftsmanship

I’ve been working with Scrivener for only a few days and already have two large projects underway. The developer’s approach is right up my alley: writing is non-linear, with frequent flights between the sections of a long work part of the process. Scrivener has the tools to handle projects from conception to self-publication, and the customization to fit personal preferences and work habits. Write an outline for example, and use the split screen view to flesh out the details of your outline to draft a chapter; then look over your work on the “corkboard" and rearrange paragraphs and passages in any way that suits you. You can take a “snapshot” of an early version to compare to your later revisions, if you so desire. I recommend starting with the iOS app to learn the basics quickly while reading the entire tutorial offered on the Mac (a very nice work by the developer, whose persona in print reminds me of the best of my teachers). The Dropbox sync between devices is effective, so you can start building a manuscript on your iPad in minutes while still learning and playing with the full feature set on your desktop or notebook. My only disappointment is the steep price relative to most writing kit apps. A “bundle” option offering a modest discount for a combined purchase of Mac and mobile versions would be appreciated, though I have a hunch the outlay will be a worthwhile investment in the end.

Outstanding Program

This is simply an oustanding piece of software for anyone looking to write in a non-liner fashion. This is actually how I use Scrivener now and discover new features and why I fall in love with it all over again! I did the big tutorial and read all the crap, but ultimately I forgot it. I just started working with it. As I wrote more and more I would naturally think “you know, I wish I could do this” or “I would like to be able to do this.” I would Google it and Scrivener would be able to do it!!! I would discover new features and enhance my own process as I went along. This is unlike most other software where I had to read manuals and get told what it could do and how to do it! It’s really different and really makes the process fun and makes Scrivener stand out. Very little software has that. This application finally pushed me to start writing and my the iOS sync over Dropbox has worked flawlessly. This program just keeps getting better.
