A work of true craftsmanship
I’ve been working with Scrivener for only a few days and already have two large projects underway. The developer’s approach is right up my alley: writing is non-linear, with frequent flights between the sections of a long work part of the process. Scrivener has the tools to handle projects from conception to self-publication, and the customization to fit personal preferences and work habits. Write an outline for example, and use the split screen view to flesh out the details of your outline to draft a chapter; then look over your work on the “corkboard" and rearrange paragraphs and passages in any way that suits you. You can take a “snapshot” of an early version to compare to your later revisions, if you so desire.
I recommend starting with the iOS app to learn the basics quickly while reading the entire tutorial offered on the Mac (a very nice work by the developer, whose persona in print reminds me of the best of my teachers). The Dropbox sync between devices is effective, so you can start building a manuscript on your iPad in minutes while still learning and playing with the full feature set on your desktop or notebook.
My only disappointment is the steep price relative to most writing kit apps. A “bundle” option offering a modest discount for a combined purchase of Mac and mobile versions would be appreciated, though I have a hunch the outlay will be a worthwhile investment in the end.
