Scrivener App Reviews

Very great app ever. however, its table editing and page layout function need to improve.

Its the best app that can make me organize my essay. You must not miss it. But its table editing function is very poor. it need to make some improvement. Besides, I write lab report a lot. I need to insert a lot of graphs in my report. So I prefer make some pages in landscape. However, the app cannot set single page in landscape. If I set the page in landscape, it will affect all content. So I can just squeeze my graphs and tables in a portrait page. I think the app is very good for script editing, not for engineering.

Surpassed all my expectations

Flawless update improved the program so much that I can scarcely believe I was able to even use it before. More in love with Scrivener than ever! Thanks Literature & Latte!

Just Perfect!

I just LOVE this app. Dont hesitate to try. Really improve and ease the writing process.

Wow!

I am blown away by this — "app" is too wimpy a word to describe it. It has about a gazillion features (no single user is ever likely to need them all), yet its incredibly stable and fast-loading, and not a battery hog. Also, I found it surprisingly easy to learn, thanks to the included tutorial. I got the free trial first and was sold after three days. The more complex your writing project, the more this baby shines, plus its lots of fun to use! I havent even discovered all its features, but the best for me so far is Composition Mode: your text comes up in full screen, hiding all distractions. You can customise it (like almost everything in the UI) to make it as Zen as you like while you write. Then, when you need to go back to organisational stuff, you can. Scrivener is by far the best app Ive ever bought. Worth every penny. It ROCKS.

Are You Kidding?

I acquired Scrivener after reading many of the reviews and thoroughly exploring the functions and features of the product. It is, in my opinion, needlessly complex and counter-intuitive with an interface and command structure that hinders creative effort. I very much regret my purchase and will return to the Windows environment where, strangely, programs are actually far easier to execute and deploy. Where is the equivalent of One Note in the Apple environment?

Ideal for long structured documents

As a professional, i need to write user manuals and software design documents. I bought Scrivener because I wanted to keep all of my research/reference informations and my draft document together. I also wanted an easy way to reorganize my ideas and draft text sections so that I can iteratively release my documents. Scrivener has gone beyond my expectations in terms of workflow and flexibility. I can put down my text in any order and rearrange it afterwards. Its highly customizable meta-data allows draft and final text to be mixed without losing track of what needs to be reviewed. Scrivener synopsis feature is also a must to remain focus on the topic when written long documents. I really appreciate the fact that I can write without worrying about the final format. It provides a cleanup slate in which to drop my ideas and concentrate on what is more important: the message that I want to get across. When my document is ready for review or publishing, Scrivener allows me to compile the desired document sections into various formats such has PDF, RTF, HTML, mobi, kindle, epub, fdx, etc… I strongly recommend Scrivener for writing long technical documents where you need to trough your ideas down on paper (screen in this case) and iteratively organize and polish them into a cohesive document. No other word/text processing software I have tried offers the flexibility and workflow given by Scrivener.

New Update is not working

Just like super dudes I cant open Scrivener and the same message: "Scrivener.app is damaged and cant be opened. delete scrivener.app and download it again from the app store" and its terribly annoying as I have tried everything that was suggested on the support page. The only thing left is to send an email to the technical support. Other than that, it was an awesome app!

Excellent

Scrivener was recommended to me while I was still using a PC at home. All my writing was done in various word processors. Once I returned to using a Mac, this was the first App I got. I love the interface and the customization I can get with it. Ive used it at work for reports, and at home for my Essays and working on my novel. I have recommended this to all my writer friends that didnt know about it, and all my classmates as well for writing essays. It will always be locked to my dock, and will always be on my computer. Id love to see an iPad version at some point, but that doesnt take away from my love of the program.

Powerful and easy to use

I have had PCs my whole life. A week or so ago I bought a Mac and one of the first downloads was Scrivener. I have fooled around with other writing programs and have never been impressed enough to stray away from Word. Scrivener is easy to get started with and then truly powerful once you get started. I have imported a story I am working on, created character profiles with graphics, and I have exported to ePub format. I can read my own boo on my iPad. This is all in a few days. There is also a lot of help online. I have found a very detailed character outline form. I put that into my main character profiles. This is a great program for writers.

Nice App.

Very nice writing app. Steep learning curve as it is a very robust app, but you can start after a quick tutorial and use the basics until you figure out the rest. Couple of things I would like to see in updates: I would like a section where I can document my daily word counts. I want to be able to see at a glance how I am progressing on my manuscript. Should be able to count words by day/month even by hour, this would help for deadlines, and most productive times. I like to block out each scene before I write and the doc note is too small. I really like bieng able to move entire scenes and chapters with such ease. Like the cork board. Like having all my information on characters, locations, reasearch all at my finger tips. Very nice feature. Everything I need is in one place. Character templates are a nice place to start. All in all a wonderful Writers tool!

Excellent Features - Way better than other programs

Ive been impressed with Scrivener. The program has made planning/starting my first novel a breeze. The interface takes some learning, but the organization is excellent. I love how easy it is to write notes, make chapters, rearrange information, find/replace text, split screen, create various research files, view the corkboard outline, and more. As another reviewer commented, it would be nice to have more statistics on word count/progress - helpful to many writers Im sure. Aside from writing a novel, in my own world this app would be very handy in writing a research paper. i love that you can have a different file open on the split screen mode. Overall Im very satisfied with this app and think it is well worth the money. So much better than using MS Word for writing!!!!!

INCREDIBLE!

Once I discovered the absolute heaven that is writing in Scrivener, I began to cringe every time I remembered myself using Word as the word processor for my project. No wonder I always had writers block, my writing was disorganized and required many edits…Once you experience Scrivener composition mode - with a fully customizable layout - it becomes clear how limited you really are with other programs! Without all the distractions and the plainness of Word, Ive found myself writing more, and being much happier with the end result. Like some other reviewers have said, this program is really perfect for any type of project you choose to pursue, and it makes it easier to learn a particular style if youve never used it before! (Such as script writing, in my case). Thank you so much, Scrivener team, Ive never been happier with a paid app before!! :)

potentially slick with some flaws

Seems slick so far, if a bit complicated to learn. It seems like it takes quite a bit of time to learn thoroughly. I wanted to create (or compile) a synopsis from the synopses of sections I created, and for some reason this took a while to figure out how to do. i.e. the functions are not very transparent. Not totally compatible with Word. e.g. if you create bullet lists with one or the other, and go back and forth, the lists get screwed up. For some reason it creates enormous files. A file that was essentially 20 pages of notes with one small graphic became a 91 MB file.

A Highly Effective Tool for Any Writer

My use of this software is perhaps not the typical one because I am a freelance technical writer with a focus on complex infrastructure projects. In my use of this product, I find it extremely effective in working with highly structured documentation that is very technical. What I really like about this product is that it allows me to focus on the content and its structure and I do not have to struggle with the distraction of formatting and performance issues. I find that I am much more productive using Scrivener. I also like that I can annotate topics and keep track of needed updates. Scrivener makes it easy to manage content and to be flexible. Oftentimes, I have to put aside one piece of work and pursue another depending on the shifting schedules of my contributors. Scrivener gives me complete control of the material and allows me to keep track of large, complex documents. As well, it is a great tool for positing how I might re-arrange document sections. And, because Scrivener is not tied to a particular format, I can write and structure text without regard to the eventual output. It is great fun to work with real whiz bang formatting tools such as those used for online publishing, desk top publishing, and the like but as every writer comes to realize, these tools can get in the way of what really matters: useful content that is well organized into a structure that serves the audience’s needs. My last observation is that because Scrivener focuses on content and its structure, it is a lot easier to take the output and put it into the required published form. I have a much clearer idea of how I want to arrange the content and this translates to a more effective focus on the publishing phase rather than trying to write and arrange content at the same time that I have to manipulate the format.

There is no better application for writing than this!

This is without exception the best writing software I’ve ever used! Period.

Finally!

After trying 4 other writing apps and being dissatisifed , I ended up with Scrivener. I do a lot of photography, and my benchmark for a good camera is “does the functionality get in the way of taking images”, if the answer is yes, then the camera is a dud. I judge writing software the same way, and so far all the others have UI problems that detract from the writing experience. Scrivener does not and enhances it wonderfully. It does take some time spent watching the tutorials to get a handle on the features, but once learned you realize the power of them. Sadly I burned through some money before finding Scrivener. Well done.

Not just for novelists or screenwriters

i’ve been slogging through a website requirements document for over a week, when this app came up in the AppStore, and it has changed my life. It allowed me to divide the document up into small chunks, associate notes to each of those chunks, and focus on just the task at hand. rearranging content after the fact couldn’t be easier. i can’t recommend it enough.

what more can i say

El Captitan update review: just perfect. ======= scrivener is simply perfect, i use it to do all the writings on a daily basis. the concept of breaking your writing projects into little chuncks is awesome, plus the customer service is great i just wish it’d have more aesthetic designs, cuz i’m not quite happy with its current logo, but hey, it’s a productivity app and it does what it’s suppose to do

Any app that can erase all your work should not be used.

This app is good in almost every respect EXCEPT that I was unwittingly able to ERASE MY ENTIRE NOVEL and unable to retrieve it. Use this product at your own risk. I won’t use it again because I don’t like re-typing enitre books. I would rate it zero but i cant

Still lacking bibliographic management tools

Excellent app for writing, great for production and can be formatted to suit almost any workflow. The only major drawback for academic writing is a good bibliographic management system/ or the ability to integrate with citation management tools. This is the key point which makes Scrivener a headache for academic/technical writing and should be addressed, as it it otherwise excellent.
